Winter's Return Mac OS

This specific post is a background story on my usage of Apple software and OSX. For technical procedures skip this post and go straight to the next. No more copious amount of text, I promise!

The longest of intros

I’ve been an Apple user since late 2010 when I bought my MacBook Pro 13.5″ laptop that came bundled with Apple’s -then- standard OS: OS X (10.6.8) Snow Leopard. As such, I got used to a kind of Apple software that today is considered a mere mirage from the past (especially taking usability into account).
Since the passing of Steeve Jobs, the company has released a series of branded ‘upgrades’ that, to my opinion, have not been upgrades at all but rather make-over graphics and changes meant to approximate Apple’s business model to it’s competitors mainly in the mobile sector (i.e. Samsung and Google).
The 4 iterations (especially the last 3) have, graphically, been a train wreck, from the garish colour pallet and the completely incoherence of icons to the unreadable fonts.
Many have claimed the garish -mainly white- pallet and streamlined graphics to be the next ‘great step’ for the Aqua Theme. To me, it is just Apple trying to copy Microsoft’s Lumia user interface (yes, Microsoft and its horrid Metro UI was the first at it, back when doing squares and circles for icons was considered laziness from graphic designers).

Back to the point. I have never stopped using Snow Leopard in my main machine and, to this day haven’t had any real problems apart from the annoying end of Webkit support which forces me to use two web browsers, Safari for general websites and Firefox for troublesome ones; and Java RunTime Environment (latest version for 10.6.8 is JavaRE V.7.0.0 installation procedure here, kudos to Niksa Jakovljevic). Sure my OS isn’t officially supported by the manufacturer. As long as there are backups and general knowledge there should be no trouble.

Meanwhile I got a second-hand Mac, an iMac from about the same year. Since this Mac was to be a multi-OS machine (running Windows 7 and OSX) I decided to ‘upgrade’ it to OSX (10.11.1) El Capitan, the most recent.

Arriving at The Misspelled OS

The first thing I noticed was that I couldn’t bare to look at the 24″ display with the default brightness. My eyes watered the whole 10 minutes before I eventually quit. After googling the matter I came across this ‘dark mode’ to slightly address this issue.

How To Update Mac Os

Another annoyance was the AutoCorrect that decided to pick words at random and replace what I had written.

Tip – Turn AutoCorrect off

  1. Open TextEdit;
  2. Under ‘Edit’ menu point to ‘Substitution’;
  3. Uncheck ‘Show Substitutions’.
  4. Also under ‘Edit’ menu point to ‘Spelling and Grammar’;
  5. Uncheck ‘Check document now’ and ‘Show spelling grammar’.

EASY! This definition will now carry to other system applications.

Also, started to get notifications of my messages with a delay of a 1 ½ days. It was rather weird but I managed to tweak this and that.
The typeface seems less sharp. The response time has also increased a bit.

At this point the only thing I can think of is how can I mod the look of this thing to make it more pleasant to work in. The solution was to make it in the image of perfect: Mod it back to Snow Leopard!

So, here we go! I am going to show you how to mod El Capitan, the hard and dirty way. Bare in mind these mods are being presented to you as they’re implemented. We’ll be messing with system files and, if done improperly, it may render your OS inoperable (even I am not really sure. It’s a trial and error, mostly). Everything will be properly disclaimed though.
